Flushing Away Poverty

St Mark’s Church in North Road, Darlington have been busy twinning their three church loos this month.

The campaign was launched by the curate Revd Caroline Ferguson, with a sermon on the history of the loo and an insight into the effects of bad sanitation in the world.

Revd Caroline said “Toilet Twinning provides people in the poorest communities on the planet with a decent toilet, clean water and all the information they need to stay healthy. It’s the key to helping whole communities break free of the poverty trap. 2.5 billion people don’t have somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the loo and by supporting Toilet Twinning, organised by the Tearfund, we can make a real difference to people’s lives. For £60 per toilet everyone should think about twinning their loo!.”.

A chamber pot was used as a collection plate and the congregation generously rose to the challenge to help flush away poverty.
