The grand old lady – St. Mary Magdalene Church, Belmont – stands even more proudly in 2016 in the junction of Broomside Lane and Carrville High Street. She boasts her newly repaired roof and rainwater systems, a set of repairs long overdue and completed with the help of a grant from The Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund which was announced in by The Chancellor in March 2015.

St Mary Magdalene – Belmont
Belmont’s award of £11,900 was one of 502 grants awarded nationally from a funding package of £30 million, administered by The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; it is one one of seven grants awarded in Durham Diocese.
The grant has generously enhanced the fundraising efforts of the church congregation and members of the community in meeting the overall costs of the repairs – just over £26,000 – which were managed by Architect David Beaumont of Beaumont:brown, Castle Eden, and David Ferguson, Roofing Contractor of Hayden Bridge.
“St Mary Magdalene is central to this community, not just geographically at the centre of the road leading into Belmont but also in the lives of so many people who live here. Hundreds of people use this building each week, for worship, choir, craft activities and more. Its been great to see how warmly the local community have responded, so that the roof is in good order for the next 150 years.”
