The Right Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham was asked to comment on the current refugee situation by the Newcastle Journal and Sunday Sun. In the article published today Sunday 5th September he said: “The current refugee crisis is an enormous challenge to all of Europe.
“As a nation we have put in huge support within the region to support Syrian refugees. We have also played an important part in the rescue efforts in the Mediterranean. However we do also have to play our part in responding to the exodus into Europe. National Government, local councils, communities, and individuals all need to play their part together. Churches, and other faith communities should be part of offering welcome, sanctuary and support to thousands of people whose plight is desperate.
“This humanitarian response will not resolve the long term issues that are very complex. But it is a proper response to people who are beloved human beings just like us.”
